Adding a mailbox to your webhosting service
This procedure specifies how to create a new POP3 or IMAP mailbox for use with your domainname, hosted on our server. Once done, you'll be able to add the details in the "create POP3/IMAP account" screens of your mail software (such as Outlook or Thunderbird) or device.
- allocate username and password (see our selection of password strategies)
- note the username and password in a secure location
- login to the website control panel
- create the mailbox:
- regular hosting accounts:
- click the 'Email Control' tab
- next to your domainname, click the 'Mailboxes' link
- click 'Add Mailbox'
- enter the left-most portion of the email address (eg. info)
- enter and confirm the password
- change quota if needed
- click 'Next Step'
The following details will need to be provided to the client email software:
- email address: username@yourdomain.com
- POP3/IMAP (inbound) server: hostingaccountname.dns-systems.net (where hostingaccountname is the username given at the top of your welcome letter)
- SMTP (outbound) server: if you're using your hosting account to send mail (recommended), then this should be hostingaccountname.dns-systems.net (where hostingaccountname is the username given at the top of your welcome letter)
- username: username-yourdomain-com (note the hyphens - the username is your email address with the @ sign and all fullstops replaced by hyphens - for example, if your address was info@yourdomain.com, your username would be info-yourdomain-com)
- password: as specified above
Notes:
- The mailbox may take up to 15 mins to become active.
- If your account includes spam and virus protection, you should use the hosted SMTP server.
- If you receive a message "mailbox already exists" when you try and create a mailbox, but you cannot see it listed in the list of mailboxes, check the Redirects (forwards) screen. It's not possible to create a mailbox with the same name as a redirect.
- If the address is longer than 30 characters, only the first 30 characters will become the username. If, for example, the address communityservices@blazingfibre.net is used, the username for this address will become communityservices-blazingfibre (30 characters in length).
- If you're using your ISP's server to send mail (not recommended), please consult your ISP's support pages to obtain the correct SMTP settings.
- Pro hosting accounts:
- under Mail, click Email Accounts
- enter the left-most portion of the email address (eg. info)
- if on a multisite account, select the correct domainname from the dropdown
- enter and confirm the password
- change quota if needed
- click the Create Account button
The following details will need to be provided to the client email software:
- email address: username@yourdomain.com
- POP3/IMAP (inbound) server: mail.yourdomain.com (where yourdomain is your your domain name)
- SMTP (outbound) server: smtp.yourisp.com
- username: username@yourdomain.com (the same as your email address)
